Old Peritheia and Mount Pantokrator
Corfu, one of the most enchanting islands of the Ionian, is famous for its natural beauty, architecture, and rich history. Among the island’s attractions, Old Peritheia and Mount Pantokrator stand out as two of the most authentic and interesting places to explore. Old Peritheia, a medieval village at the foot of the mountain, and Pantokrator, the highest mountain in Corfu, offer unique experiences for both history lovers and nature enthusiasts.
Old Peritheia is one of the oldest villages in Corfu, with a history dating back to the 14th century. Built at an altitude of about 450 meters, the village offers a unique sense of authenticity as it preserves its Venetian architecture intact. Old Peritheia was created during the Venetian rule in Corfu as a safe settlement away from the coast to protect it from pirate raids. Thanks to its strategic location, the village flourished for centuries and became one of the most prosperous mountain villages on the island. After the 19th century, with the eradication of piracy and the migration of the population to coastal areas, the village was gradually abandoned. Today, Old Peritheia is a living museum of Venetian architecture. Walking through its stone-paved streets, visitors can admire the imposing stone mansions, traditional houses, and churches that are well-preserved. Among its most significant sights are the ruined mansions, which once belonged to wealthy Corfiot families, reflecting the village’s former glory, as well as the various picturesque churches surrounding it. In recent years, Old Peritheia has experienced a revival, with several buildings renovated and visitors coming to enjoy the authentic atmosphere and tranquility of the village. The tavernas that have opened there offer excellent food with local specialties such as sofrito, pastitsio, and Corfiot burdeto.
The unique mountain that hosts Old Peritheia, Mount Pantokrator, at 906 meters high, is the highest mountain in Corfu and offers a panoramic view that stretches from the shores of Greece to Albania. The ascent of the mountain is an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and hikers. The mountain is located in the northeastern part of the island and is characterized by impressive rocky formations, dense vegetation, and small mountain villages. On its slopes, one can find vineyards, olive groves, and cypress trees, as well as rare species of flora and fauna.
Mount Pantokrator
At the summit of the mountain stands the historic Monastery of Pantokrator, dating back to the 14th century. The monastery is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior and is an important religious pilgrimage site. Visitors can admire its Byzantine architecture, the old icons, and the frescoes that decorate its interior.
Pantokrator is a popular destination for hiking, as it has several trails crossing the mountain. The most famous routes include: The ascent from Old Peritheia, a trail of about 4 kilometers leading to the summit through lush paths. The trail from Strinylas, another picturesque village near the summit, which offers excellent views, as well as various cycling routes, which are particularly popular among visitors who prefer to explore the mountain by mountain bike. From the top of Pantokrator, the view is truly spectacular. On clear days, one can see the enchanting Ionian Sea and the opposite shores of Epirus. To the north, the Diapontia Islands (Ereikoussa, Mathraki, Othoni) can be seen, while the town and villages of the entire island appear like miniatures.
Old Peritheia and Mount Pantokrator are two of the most authentic and captivating destinations in Corfu. The village offers a glimpse into the island’s past, with its unique architecture and serene atmosphere, while Mount Pantokrator offers incredible natural beauty and panoramic views. Whether you are a lover of history or nature, a visit to these places is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
