Achilleion and Gastouri
Achilleion is one of the most beautiful and distinctive buildings in all of Corfu. Its unique architecture stands as an exceptional example of history and culture, inviting visitors to take a journey back in time to an era entirely different from the present.
Located about 10 kilometers away from the picturesque Old Town of Corfu, the Achilleion Palace is perched atop a lush, green hill. Its construction began in 1889 when Empress Elisabeth of Austria, famously known as Sisi, decided to build a summer retreat on the island to escape the burdens of the imperial court. The choice of the name “Achilleion” reflects the empress’s admiration for the hero Achilles, as well as her deep appreciation for Greek culture and mythology. The building was designed by the Italian architect Raffaele Caritto and features neoclassical elements with strong influences from Greek mythology.
Both the interior and exterior of Achilleion are adorned with an array of unique sculptures that reflect the highest artistry of classical sculpture and historical significance. One of the most striking pieces is the statue of the Dying Achilles, created by the sculptor Herter, which depicts the legendary warrior after receiving the fatal wound to his heel.
Following the death of the empress, Achilleion was left abandoned for a period of time. In 1907, a few years later, it was purchased by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. The Kaiser greatly admired both the architecture of the building and the natural beauty surrounding it, and he sought to enhance it even further. He commissioned the installation of the statue of Victorious Achilles in a spot offering a breathtaking view of Corfu’s Old Town. This statue portrays the mythical hero in a moment of triumph and glory.
Inside the palace, visitors have the opportunity to step into a different time period and experience the grandeur of a past era. The walls are decorated with magnificent paintings and architectural details that provide a glimpse into 19th-century art, blended with a love for Greek mythology. Today, Achilleion serves as a museum, housing exhibits related to the palace’s history and Empress Sisi’s life. The surrounding gardens and open spaces are often used for cultural events and activities, preserving the rich cultural heritage of the area.
Adjacent to the Achilleion Palace lies one of Corfu’s most charming and traditional villages—Gastouri. Nestled on the lower slopes of the Agii Deka mountain, at an elevation of approximately 120 meters, the village is located southwest of Corfu Town. Gastouri boasts a rich history, with records dating back to 1474. Its location attracted the wealthy families of Corfu, who built summer residences in the village to enjoy its mild climate and stunning landscape. The village has retained its traditional architecture, featuring narrow streets and old houses that offer visitors an authentic experience of Corfu’s past.
A Picturesque Village
Throughout the year, Gastouri hosts annual celebrations, such as the festival of Panagia Odigitria on August 23rd and the Epiphany celebrations, drawing both locals and tourists. The village flourished during the 19th century, leading to the establishment of its own Philharmonic Society, named “Omonia.” This band is the third-oldest in Corfu and remains one of the island’s most significant music education institutions.
